Bellyfull of Plastic

Think that Texas-size pile of plastic refuse is just spinning out there in the South Pacific? Wrong! Photographer Chris Jordan traveled to the Midway Islands to see firsthand how our eon-resistant junk is now entering the food chain. You probably didn't schedule "looking at images of rotting bird carcasses" as part of your weekend to-do list, but this gallery is well worth your time. Thanks to @rachelannyes for the link.

New iPhone Calcultor App Censors Naughty "Calculator Words"

Thanks goodness for corporate citizenship:

"Nothing has haunted the American people like the knowledge that parents may be sending their children to schools in which, with a press of few buttons and some crafty calculator flipping, youngsters could be exposed to numbers that vaguely resemble the word “BOOBIES.”

Personally, I prefer "BOOBLESS" but that's just a matter of taste. Good to see we're being protected from ourselves.

Weekly Weed News Hits the Big Time

The cover story for the September 15 issue of Fortune magazine is called "How Marijuana Became Legal" and features a straightforward, clear-eyed assessment of the American marijuana economy. It also touches on several of the items we've covered on Weekly Weed News over the past year. For example:

"In California...A legalization bill has been introduced in the state legislature, and the state board of equalization has estimated that if passed, it would bring in $1.4 billion in new revenue, a seemingly conservative estimate."

"After rigorous testing, the FDA found THC to be safe and effective for the treatment of nausea, vomiting, and wasting diseases. This lawful, Schedule II drug, trade-named Marinol, is taken orally, by capsule."

"The best-known is Oaksterdam University, which trains medical cannabis entrepreneurs to navigate the business and legal challenges."

Then there's Marie Claire, which published a story called "Stiletto Stoners" about educated, professional women who relax with a joint instead of a glass of wine at the end of a hard day:

"She twists off the cap, pinches off a piece of the fragrant green bud inside, gingerly places it in the bowl of the pipe, and lights up. Over the next 30 minutes, she takes three deep drags, enough to drown out the noise whirring in her head. Then she eats."

That sounds about right. Good to see mainstream press actually addressing the nation's millions of marijuana users as grown-ups. Now about that drug war...

We Won't Have Ted Williams Head to Kick Around Anymore...

The cryogeniclly preserved head of baseball legend Ted Williams has seen better days. Not only because it's been on ice since 2002--additionally, "tiny pieces of frozen head" have been chipped off the old block:

"...as another Alcor employee removed Williams' head from the freezer with a stick, and tried to dislodge the tuna can by swinging at it with a monkey wrench."

Not many news stories feature a tuna can and a monkey wrench. That's like batting .400.

Weekly Weed News: San Diego Cracks Down on Medical Marijuana

While it seems the rest of the country is coming to grips with American's insatiable appetite for weed, it's use as medicine, and increasing decriminalization of the drug, San Diego law enforcement is taking upon itself to reverse the spin of the Earth on its axis:

"More than 30 people were arrested last week in San Diego on charges of illegally distributing marijuana — part of the city's crackdown on medical marijuana dispensaries."

So, you may want to consider a vacation in Denver this fall...

Los Angeles - Stealing Our Water, Wasting It

Need another reason to hate Los Angeles? Here's what those people are doing with YOUR water:

"Torrents of water have been sweeping cars off streets and barbeques out of backyards as aging water pipes have been bursting at a rate of more than one a day in recent weeks."

Two states. We need two states. North and South. TWO STATES!

Huffington Post: " When Getting Beaten By Your Husband Is A Pre-Existing Condition"

I've steered fairly clear of the health care stuff, but this...

"It turns out that in eight states, plus the District of Columbia, getting beaten up by your spouse is a pre-existing condition."

Ugh. Just ugh.

400 Years of Looking Down a Long, Thin Pipe (at the stars)

Don't be bored. Go look through a telescope to celebrate its anniversary:

"In late August 1609, Galileo Galilei demonstrated his 8-power hand-built telescope to Venetian notables. (Note that the word "telescope" was actually coined in 1611, and that there were several terms such a "looker" used previously.) This won him a lifetime appointment to a university chair and raised his salary from 520 to 1000 florins per year. His built his first 3X telescope sometime in early 1609 after hearing about such "lookers" being built elsewhere in Europe."

Simply Put, The Smell of Death is Ancient

As long as animals have lived, they have died. And as long as animals have died, they have stunk. Livescience.com reports:

"Dead ants no longer smell like live ants, for example, and the result is they get carried out of the nest," found a study presented at the bacchanal otherwise known as an American Chemical Society meeting.

Hungover interns used needles to extract juice from dead cockroaches. The least you can do is check out the findings.

Star Consumes Planet in Romantic Death Embrace

I swoon for star-crossed lovers, especially when one of the lovers is a star:

"If the team reporting the discovery is correct about the planet’s future, astronomers should begin to see evidence of a long, very lazy plunge into the star within the next decade..."

I prefer long, lazy plunges into a bottle of Riunite in the company of someone else's wife. But to each his own.

Too bad we won't be around to see this death pact consummated...another million years from now. Sigh.

What you should be listening to right now: Nisennenmondai

No excuses.

Sax Solos: The Last Word on "Guilty Pleasures"

Doing this edition of Psionic Dehiscence was difficult for me, but it was inspired by Ryan Kelly's unnervingly comprehensive collection of 80s sax solo clips. This site reminded me that there are nuggets of pure pleasure in the most embarrassing corners of our musical tastes. Good thing...but I'm washing the taste out of my mouth next week with two hours of live noise when Torture Memo returns to the show next week.

Frog Sex Like Human Sex: Increasingly Infrequent

Melbourne University ecologist Kirsten Parris reports the sound of car horns is drowning out the sweet, seductive tones of the popplebonk(!) frog. To wit:

"...competition from traffic noise in Melbourne could be a reason why frog numbers have declined in Australia's second-largest city since her survey of more than 100 ponds began in 2000, she said."

By the way, eight years of frog pond sex surveys may also impact your sex life.

Petaluma Girl Busted for Hit & Run on Valencia

Remember in July when that guy, riding his bike with his four year-old on a trailer, was run down while crossing 18th street with the green light? Well...busted!

"...a 16-year-old Santa Rosa girl has been arrested in the hit-and-run crash that left a bicyclist and his young son injured on Valencia Street early last month."

Weekly Weed News, Part Deux: Burning Trees!

No, really.

It appears the lack of legal marijuana farms in a state where voters chose to legalize medical marijuana can cause some collateral issues. Like, 30,000 plants that ignited and burnt 90,000 acres of forest. Oops...who left the brownies in the oven?

Weekly Weed News: A Full Scale Drug War is the Only Thing Between the US and Legalization

Mexico legalized possession of small amounts of weed, heroin, and cocaine in an attempt to deal with demand created in the US due to criminalization here. Yeah us!

The move is "designed to prevent corrupt police from seeking bribes from small-time drug users, and to encourage addicts to seek treatment." what a novel idea.

Oh, by the way, more than 11,000 people have died from drug violence in Mexico over the past three years.

George Bush: Exactly as Crazy as You Thought

Boing Boing found this lovely tidbit, buried in the Council for Secular Humanism:

Former French President Jaques Chirac says that in 2003, President Bush asked him to send troops to Iraq to stop Gog and Magog, the "Bible’s satanic agents of the Apocalypse."

Discuss.

Kidnapping American Hikers: Worked So Well in N. Korea, Iran's Giving it a Try

We get two back, but give three up. What's the deal? ABC says:

"The three tourists were detained after evidently straying into Iran while hiking in the mountains in the Iraqi border town of Ahmed Awah, a popular resort area famous for its pistachio trees and picturesque waterfalls. The border between Iran and Iraq is not clearly marked."

Here's a tip: regardless of how beautiful and picturesque the pistachio trees and waterfalls are, you'd think steering clear of Iran right now would be a good idea. Go figure.

Weekly Weed News: Spotted Owl Supports Legalization

Despite its green image, apparently growing weed is bad for the environment. Treehugger finds:

"Irrigation tubes that snake for a mile or more over forested ridges. Pesticides that have drained into creeks and entered the food chain, sickening wildlife. Piles of trash and human waste in the most rugged and bucolic drainages. 'They basically trash our public lands,' said Matt Mathes, a spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service in Vallejo."

And pesticides are poisoning rodents that are the primary food source for the Spotted Owl. So the reigning savior of the redwoods is now turning its head all the way around for weed. Good show.

Blackwater: Exactly As Evil As You Thought

The great thing about federal investigations: people present lots of information about crimes for us all to read through. It's kind of a lovely system, if you ask me.

Case in point: Blackwater (now XE) and its CEO Erik Prince. The company is now being investigated for multiple shooting deaths of Iraqis during the period when the Bush administration let the company run roughshod over that beleaguered nation. And former employees are telling some amazingly horrible stories.

Here are some sample allegations, reported by the Times Online of the UK:

  • "..murder, weapons smuggling and the deliberate slaughter of civilians.."

  • "...the company founder Erik Prince either murdered or had killed former employees co-operating with federal investigators..."

  • "Prince 'views himself as a Christian crusader tasked with eliminating Muslims and the Islamic faith from the globe'"

  • "executives destroyed incriminating videos, e-mails and documents and hid their criminal behaviour from the US State Department"

  • "..also accused Blackwater guards of boasting of kills, taking mind-altering drugs, steroids and using child prostitutes."

The moral: when you think something bad has happened--like a crime--a federal investigation is a good idea. You'll be glad you had one; usually the story turns out to be as bad as you suspected.

Friday July 31 - OUT

Sorry, I wasn't on the air last week and I spent all this week cleaning out the pigeon cages after taking a few days away from the Bay Area. So no blog updates. Note: pigeons can really make a mess, let me tell you.

The Handyman took over the show for me and played some excellent tunes. You can listen to the show here

But if you're looking for a playlist, you're shit out of luck. Sorry.

Algae Mystery Solved: It's Algae!

Dr. Sean, Medicine Woman wins the prize. Last week's lead story--the giant black blob floating off the Alaskan coast--really is just algae. Just like he said. And no, it's not going to devour us, unlock the mysteries of the universe, of become an alternative source of power. It's just going to float around Alaska and disgust us all. Like Sarah Palin.

Tonight! Dark Night of the Soul

Tangled as it is in the legal pissings of the record industry, the Sparklehorse, Dangermouse, David Lynch collaboration "Dark Night of the Soul" may never see an official release. Fortunately, like Dangermouse's Beatles/Jay-Z mashup "The Grey Album" before it, DNOTS is widely available on the Internet. Lucky us!

And so, I'll be playing it tonight on Pirate Cat Radio, 87.9FM or on the internet stream. Plus songs from all the involved parties.

Sadly, the best overview of the DNOTS situation comes from Rolling Stone. Read about it, if you like. I give the story three stars...it means you never having to say you're sorry.

Tomorrow: Global Day of Action in Support of Iran

But seriously, folks...

San Francisco joins nearly 100 cities worldwide to support those protesting the violent government response to the suspicious results of the recent Iranian presidential election. Get out there and show your support at Civic Center Plaza, Saturday at Noon.

For background, here's the show we did about the Iran election.

Japan Attacked by Giant Jellyfish, Nation Responds by Serving Ice Cream

Pink, slimy, six-foot-wide, 400+ pound jellyfish are preparing for a holiday in the Sea of Japan. Millions of Echizen kurage, or Nomura’s jellyfish, are cooling their tentacles near Korea before their drift towards Japan over the next few months. Good thing the island nation doesn't have a diet that relies much on fish, because the jellypocalypes has completely shut down commercial fishing in the past. Doh!

According to the Wall Street Journal's 2007 report on the jellyswarm, the Nomura jellyfish were historically only occasionally spotted in the Sea of Japan. But during the largest outbreak yet in 2005, an estimated 500 million jellyfish splashed down EVERY FRICKEN DAY!

The Times Online UK continues: "No one is sure about the reasons for the slimy plague. One theory is that global warming is heating up the sea water and encouraging them to breed. Another blames effluent from rivers in China [see: Three Gorges Dam], which carries nutrients on which the jellyfish feed. Another blames over-fishing of other species, leaving a surfeit of plankton for the Echizen kurage to feed on.

Meanwhile, enterprising Japanese are making the most of the maritime catastrophe. Fishermen have devised ways of keeping the jellyfish out of their nets with sharp wires. Scientists have discovered a method of extracting collagen form the jellyfish, an ingredient of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, increasingly valued as a health food, and usually extracted from pig or fish carcasses."

So you can inject jellyfish into your lips to make them full and supple. Cool.Even cooler, you can inject jellyfish into your belly (via your esophagus) to make it, uh, full and supple. Thanks to the Tango Jersey Dairy, that is. The company will hunt inside the jellyfish blizzard to create it's now seasonal vanilla jellyfish ice cream. The product is described as "slightly chewy." Please celebrate environmental doom with a bowl. This story ends on a happy note.

July 24 Psionic Dehiscence Will Feature Unreleased "Dark Night of the Soul"

Still working it out, but rest assured I'll be playing the Danger Mouse/Sparklehorse/David Lynch record--currently locked in the EMI vaults for some unknown reason--in its entirety. More to come.

Weekly Weed News: iPhone App Helps Users "Find Marijuana"

Cool enough to have an iPhone but not cool enough to have a dealer? A new application for your world hunger-solving pocket computer can now also help you find medical marijuana dispensaries, or "compassion centers," near you.

Says the Guardian UK:

"For just $2.99 Apple is offering customers a service that allows them to find local marijuana suppliers. The news has created a buzz online, as the world's stoners contemplate carrying out online price comparisons between dealers in their local areas.

But before bongs are fired up in celebration it should be noted the new service actually aims to help people locate legal medical suppliers in the US, rather than the best place to get hold of a quarter of Moroccan black in the neighbourhood."

Bioterror on the AK Coast!

While Alaska governor Sarah Palin spends her final days in office spreading crazy via the Washington Post and Twittering about the strength and beauty of the state's bear population, she's ignoring a real treat to national defense that she swore she was on top of.

As Palin reminded us during the 2008 presidential campaign, Alaska is the United State's first line of defense against threats from neighboring Russia. But this week an obvious biological weapon started washing up on the shores of Wainwright and Barrow. The Coast Guard is not sure what it is yet, but check out this description:

"From the air it looks brownish with some sheen, but when you get close and put it up on the ice and in the bucket, it's kind of blackish stuff ... (and) has hairy strands on it."

Sarah, your nation needs you! Look out across the Bering Sea and stop the threat rearing it's ugly head on the other side of the Aleutians. Or unleash some of those pesky scientists to save your coastline from despoilment. Or, leave it for the next loser to clean up.

Weekly Weed News: Harry's Hookup?

Breaking news from the world mega-selling multimedia wizard fiction franchises! Some kid who plays some character in the ubiquitous Harry Potter juggernaut was busted for growing weed. After pleading guilty, he's facing a fourteen-year prison stint. I guess these books aren't just about hormonal adolescent sorcerers learning to use their "wands." They're building some magical gravity bongs up in that fantasy academy of theirs.

Flesh-Eating Cyborgs = The Way of the Future

Fuck. Oh well.

"Energetically Autonomous Tactical Robot — that's right, "EATR" — 'can find, ingest, and extract energy from biomass in the environment (and other organically-based energy sources), as well as use conventional and alternative fuels (such as gasoline, heavy fuel, kerosene, diesel, propane, coal, cooking oil, and solar) when suitable,'

That "biomass" and "other organically-based energy sources" wouldn't necessarily be limited to plant material — animal and human corpses contain plenty of energy, and they'd be plentiful in a war zone."

Simulated Electronic Brain: "It's the neuronal equivalent of a Mexican wave"

I know about "The Wave" but I've never heard of "The Mexican Wave."

Regardless, guys in white lab coats are racing towards the vanguard to simulate human consciousness, starting by connecting a petri dish filled with rat brains to a super computer.

To wit:

"You can't assemble ever larger data fields and shake it and say, 'Ah, that's how consciousness emerges.'"

Oh snap! Dr. Markham of IBM just got totally faced by Dr. Koch of the California Institute of Technology. Hot scientist-on-scientist hairpulling ensues.

I'm not too worried about this...unless we found a way to connect a virtual, self-aware neural being to some kind of flesh eating cyborg. But that will never happen.

WTF! Curb Your Dog or Brits Love Images of Children Eating Poo

Since its launch, this "anti-fouling" campaign halved the number of dog poo reports in Torbay. It raises a few questions:

1) Who makes a report about a pile of crap? Does a cop come out and write it up? "Can you describe the poo?" Sweet Jesus!

2) Really, DAVID BUTT? This guy was born to be a source in a story about dog mess.

3) "Faeces" could be the coolest British-English spelling of a word. Way better than "colour"

4) Regardless of how effective it is, please do not show pictures of small children eating faeces.

Breaking: SoundArts Cancels!

Oh well...

No guest tonight. Me and the previously-monikered DJ M-80 will be doing something named "Call and Response" where I pick a song, then he vibes off of my song with a selection of his own. Enjoy.

Dorian Concept: Live

Just woke up to Dorian Concept's excellent Feb. 2009 record When Planets Explode. Obese, glitchy goodness. Please enjoy this video of Dorian in action, around the time the record dropped.

Thursday, July 9, 2009

Oh yeah...Twitter

So, I'm starting to take the DJ Yuri G multimedia extravaganza a bit more seriously. So, follow me on Twitter... I'm @DJYuriG.

That is all.

This week's special guests: SoundArts

Just down the street from the Pirate Cat cafe/studio is an awesome collective of musicians and producers who founded SoundArts. Aside from recording acts like Seahorse Liberation Army, Lily Taylor, and Pleasuremaker, SoundArts host classes, workshops, and music lessons to encourage creative basement/bedroom dwellers (like me) with good ideas but limited skills.

I met the SoundArts folks at the Maker Faire in May, where I got a look at the cool homemade electronic instruments they were showing off. All signs point to some kind of live performance with those instruments tomorrow night.

Tune in at 11:59pm Friday, July 10 and check it all out.
